Competition Winners, Games, New Books & A Poster

Wow - what a fabulous fortnight it has been with National Simultaneous Storytime having almost 2 Million participants. In this newsletter:

  • We announce the Learn From Play colouring-in competition winners;
  • Have a blog article about the benefits of playing Memory games;
  • Share 2 new sets of book resources (both CBCA 2021 Notable Books) - Coming Home To Country and What Do You Call Your Grandpa?;
  • Introduce a new poster to brighten your classroom; and
  • Provide a link to the new updated lower case space words.

Thank You to the 1238 children and their educators from across Australia who entered this year's NSS Colouring-In Competition.  While it was easy to find the People's Choice Winner (as shown above) with 494 votes it was very difficult to choose just 3 Junior and 3 Senior winners.  Luckily we had the help of Philip Bunting, ALIA and Scholastic.

Blog - Memory Fun at Learn From Play

Playing games and making learning fun is why so many teachers enjoy the resources at Learn From Play.  In this article we look at the game known as Memory, Concentration or Match Up.   Requiring an increasing level of visual memory as the number of cards increase Match Up teaches image discrimination, sorting and patterning which are important in developing problem-solving skills.  To find out how you can use this with your students

Featured Book Resources
Coming Home To Country

A 2021 CBCA Notable Book this is Bronwyn Bancroft’s latest picture book and appeals to both children and adults.

We have created 4 activities for this book spanning the Primary School range. There is a comprehension on What “Country” means, an art activity, a senses poem and a look at country and where students come from.

There is also a video walkthrough of these activities and some suggestions for ways you can engage with your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community and allow your students to learn on Country.

What Do You Call Your Grandpa?

A CBCA 2021 Notable Early Childhood Book this is designed for young children and grandparents everywhere.

There are 6 activities for children in Pre-School and Kindergarten / Foundation including matching rhyming words from the book, a dot-to-dot, matching children with their grandpas, making a paper boat, a find a word and a drawing activity.

There is a video walkthrough of these activities and some other ideas for how you can share the joy of this book and get your little ones physically active.

Motivate Your Class with a New Learn From Play Poster

The poster this fortnight is a beautiful message for students that all good things come at a price but that the price is usually worth paying.

Space Words Updated

As part of our NSS Give Me Some Space! activities this week we updated the word cards in the Space Unit to be lower case as these are easier for younger students to engage with and use as sight words.

Make sure you look out for next fortnight's newsletter where there will be a Sneak Preview of the next BIG THING coming to Learn From Play - Pre-School boxes and a most incredible Fundraiser for your school or pre-school!

As always if you have any questions, feedback or content suggestions for areas of the curriculum that you would like to see gamified send me an email. In the mean time, please help us grow our Learn From Play teaching community by sharing the site with your colleagues so everyone can benefit.
