Black Cockatoo by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler

Black Cockatoo is written by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler with beautiful illustrations by Dub Leffler.  It is an easy to read novella that explores the difficulties young Aboriginal children in Australia face living between 2 cultures. It is told from the perspective of a 13-year-old girl, Mia, from a remote community in the Kimberley. It weaves traditional language with modern slang to tell the tale of Mia's brother's struggle with his family and her affinity with her totem animal - the dirran or black cockatoo.
