Book Activities for Book of Curious Birds by Jennifer Cossins
This 2022 CBCA's Shortlisted Eve Pownall Award book explores 28 birds from around the world. Each beautifully illustrated double page spread includes each bird’s location, wingspan, length or height and conservation status from least concern to critically endangered, information about the bird and a picture of it.
The team at Learn From Play have created four activities for this book for students from Grade 4 and above. The activities are a bird based cross-word, a research activity to summarise one of the birds, a how to draw a north island brown kiwi and a grid drawing of one of Jennifer's birds.
You may like to take your students outside the classroom to explore some of the birds in your community and on Country around your school. They could use devices to record bird sounds, research the mating rituals and life cycles of these birds and create information reports similar to the ones Jennifer Cossins has made in this book for each of the birds they find.
