Book Activities for The River by Sally Morgan and Johnny Warrkatja Malibirr
A CBCA notable picture book for 2022 this is a sensory journey of native Australian animals found on country such as snakes, frogs, fish and emu. Perfect for pre-school age children who will enjoy looking with their eyes and listening with their ears to explore the animals found along the river.
The team at Learn From Play have created four activities for this book for children from Pre-school to Grade 1 or 2. They are a sorting activity to differentiate between man-made and natural noises in the local environment, an art activity to decorate animals, an animal matching activity and a see and hear activity. These activities invite you to take your students on local Country to explore the animals you can find.
It would also be good to have a local elder come in and share with your students their understanding of the local wildlife or make videos of a local river and share with the students what you saw and heard when you visited the river.
The games below are advertisement free and will open in a new window. They can be played by children online as many times as they like. The Match Up Memory Card Game will allow children to improve their memory while the Maze Game lets them develop strategy and problem solving skills while having fun. These games will also build children's attention, concentration and focus, visual recognition and short-term memory. Enjoy.
