Book Activities for When The Waterhole Dries Up by Kaye Baillie and Max Hamilton

This CBCA 2022 shortlisted early childhood book of the year is a fun story about a little boy who wants to have a bath but it is overrun with all his outback animal friends. Eventually he decides that it is so full, and he has waited so long, that he ends up swimming in the dam instead.

The team at Learn From Play have made 10 activities for young children in pre-school or kindergarten or their first year of school, foundation. These are steps for how to make bubble bath and blow bubbles to practice this important skill, a matching activity to join each animal to their outline, a word shape matching activity using the animals in the story, instructions to make a sponge boat and a set of handwriting and tracing activities based on the alliteration of the story.

Games

The games below are advertisement free and will open in a new window. They can be played by children online as many times as they like. The Match Up Memory Card Game will allow children to improve their memory while the Maze Game lets them develop strategy and problem solving skills while having fun. These games will also build children's attention, concentration and focus, visual recognition and short-term memory. Enjoy.

  • Just a quick note that quoll is spelled incorrectly on the free worksheet – Animal Words – otherwise I would use the worksheet.
